Prevention of Work Related Injuries

At The Body Clinic we work on the premise that it is always best to prevent. If, however, we have a situation that we cannot prevent we will then manage the patients’ needs in a manner that they can function as pain free as possible.

Work Related Injuries

Presently the workplace is full of employees fundamentally sitting stationary for most of their working day . This is due to the increase in telecommunication and computers in the workplace. This long term sitting which is normally in a poor and unsupported position causes excessive strain on many parts of the body. It is such a huge problem that according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) that in 2001/2, 12.3 million working were lost due to work related injuries and musculoskeletal disorders. Musculoskeletal disorders eg. Back and neck pain, work related upper limb disorders and repetitive strain injuries account for 49 % of absence from work. This is a higher proportion than any other condition and according to The Work Foundation cost the UK economy £7 billion each year. (The Work Foundation 2009)

In 2004/5 it was estimated that 452,000 people in the UK suffered a musculoskeletal disorder mainly affecting their back that was caused or exacerbated by their work. Each person suffering from such a condition took an average of 17.4 days of work due to this. Back pain will affect 80% of us at some point of our lives. Lost production as a result of low back pain alone costs at least £3.5 billion per year (Maniadakis and Gray 2000)

Ergonomics aims to prevent such injuries fro occurring by making sure that a person can work in a position that places minimum stress and tension throughout their joints, nerves and muscles. This will result in a reduction of the chance of developing work related injuries.

At The Body Clinic we can assess how you sit, work (on-site workstation assessment). We have Chartered Physiotherapists who have the education and experience in ergonomics to fully assess your working environment, which means we can identify the potential risks, which could be contributing to your pain or injury. Based on our findings we can provide the necessary treatment, help and advice on how to reduce your risks. These could include changing the position of your chair or keyboard, advising on a design of a chair more suited for you, show you how to use the ergonomic chair you already may have and postural education and training.

The Body Clinic can come to your workplace and perform
