The Inner Workings of Acupuncture Treatment

May 13th, 2011

Acupuncture treatment is a procedure which is carried out by piercing fine filiform needles into the skin at specific points of the body of the patient. These points are defined as being where the life energy – known as qi – flows. The areas where life energy flows are referred to as meridian.

There are twelve key meridians which acupuncture treatment focuses upon. These points connect all the vital organs including the kidney, liver and lungs. There are a whole host of physical problems which can be treated using acupuncture, such as arthritis, headaches and can even aid weight loss.

Acupuncture treatment has been used in China since ancient times. When it was originally brought over to the West it was considered to have no medicinal benefits. However, after extensive research, it is now accepted as an effective procedure to contribute towards curing certain ailments.

Many patients can be put off acupuncture treatment because they assume that is a painful procedure. This, however, is not the case and it is perfectly safe when carried out by acupuncture specialists. Acupuncture treatment appeals to many patients due to the fact that is 100% natural and does not involve taking any drugs. Acupuncture treatment is often used alongside other measures to achieve optimum results from it.

Don’t Suffer in Silence from Back and Neck Pain

April 29th, 2011

The majority of people will, at some point in their lives, suffer from some sort of back and neck pain. Some pains will only last for a few days and will go on to heal themselves, however, if back and neck pain is persistent then it is advisable to visit a qualified physiotherapist. Physiotherapists will carry out an assessment of the back and neck pain to find the cause of the discomfort, the exact location of the pain and also what the symptoms are. The physiotherapist will then be able to give a detailed prognosis and plan physical therapy to help relieve the back and neck pain.

There are two main types of back pain; acute back pain which lasts under six weeks; and chronic back pain is any back pain which continues after six weeks. There is also specific and non-specific back pain. Specific back pain is a result of a health condition or damage to the base of the spine. Non-specific back pain is generally caused by sprains, muscle strains, trapped nerves or other minor injuries.

Most cases of neck pain will disappear in a couple of days’ time. However, if it does not get any better, then a physiotherapist will be able to devise a treatment plan to help the healing process.

The Myths of Lower-back Pain

April 15th, 2011

Lower-back pain is one of the most common complaints in adults; in fact, up to 80% will experience some sort of back pain during their lifetime. This figure includes athletes, who regularly suffer from lower-back pain. There are a whole host of myths out there that claim to help prevent such problems, but we can tell you differently!

• Myth 1: Strengthening torso muscles – abs and low-back muscles – will prevent back pain.
Studies have shown that this is not actually the case, although it would seem to be logical. Findings have revealed that isometric endurance is more beneficial to preventing lower-back pain; this is being able to maintain moderate levels of force of the back muscles for extended periods of time without tiring.

• Myth 2: Always perform sit-ups with bent knees
The position of knees during sit-ups has not been found to have any particular effect on the lower-back muscles. Out of the 12 exercises that have been studied; including bent-leg sit-ups, straight-leg raises and dynamic cross-knee curl-ups, there was no apparent effect on the lower-back.

• Myth 3: A leg-length discrepancy will increase the risk of having problems with the lower-back.
It is understandable to think that having one leg shorter than the other will put strain on your back. However, research has shown that those with equal legs are just as likely to suffer from back problems and that there is no real connection between leg-length discrepancy and lumbar scoliosis and only vaguely connected with sacral tilt.

• Myth 4: Athletes who suffer from tight hamstrings are more likely to experience lower-back pain.
Once again, this is an understandable misconception as hamstrings are attached to low, posterior points on both sides of the hips. When tight, the hamstrings can then cause posterior pelvic tilt. Studies have found, however, that there is no proven association between the two and that lower-back pain could be compensatory rather than a direct result of tight hamstrings.

Sports Injury Exercises: Bicycle Leg Swings

April 11th, 2011

If you have suffered from a pulled hamstring, it is important that you don’t immediately injure yourself again once you return to training. To prevent doing so, make sure that you do appropriate strengthening exercises.

The best exercises to carry out for hamstring a sports injury, are bicycle leg swings. Begin by standing on your left leg only (you may use a wall or other type of support to keep steady). Lift your right knee to waist level until your thigh is parallel with the ground, with your knee being flexed at 90˚ or more.

Now that your thigh is parallel to the ground, straighten your right leg out in front, keeping your thigh parallel with the ground. As your leg becomes fully stretched, drop your leg down and back so that your leg is stretched behind your body. Make sure that your leg is straight and fully extended then bend your right knee and life your right heel towards your bottom. At the same time, move your right knee forward until parallel with the ground.

To start off with, do two sets of 15-30 repetitions on each leg. Increase this over several weeks until you reach 4.-60 repetitions.
